Grammys 2016 Case Study

This year's Grammys brought the biggest acts together to celebrate music both past and present. The night was filled with standout performances from Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, and Lady Gaga. Many tribute performances paid homage to artists that recently passed including Lady Gaga's tribute to David Bowie, Hollywood Vampires' tribute to Lemmy Kilmister and Stevie Wonder's tribute to Maurice White of Earth Wind and Fire.  This year was also the first year that brought in a GrammyCam to the awards, allowing fans to stream every artists reaction as they were receiving the award on stage. Taylor Swift made history being the first female to win Album of the Year twice and Kendrick Lamar won in 5 of the 11 categories that he was nominated in. Take a closer look at the performances and production of the 59th Annual Grammy's in our case study below.

Paramore also saw a huge win by being the first band with a leading female since 1999 to win for Best Rock Song for, "Ain't It Fun."  Additionally, Target was revolutionary creating a live performance commercial with Imagine Dragons to promote their new album. Take a look at some of these interesting articles and videos wrapping up the night below.

Jack White Tour Rider LEAK

What exactly happened?

Jack White Tour Rider LEAK

What exactly happened?

On February 2, 2015, Jack White played a show at University of Oklahoma.  However, five days before the performance the school's newspaper published an article discussing how much the performance was costing the school and leaked a copy of White's tour rider and contract.  In the rider, he has very specific demands of "FRESH-HOME-MADE GUACAMOLE", aged salami with a sharp knife, and a ban on bananas in the building stating, "this is a NO BANANA TOUR." Though Jack White's team requested it be taken down, the University responded that it was part of their free speech and it was public information. After the performance, University of Oklahoma was contacted by White's booking agency, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, and told that they have been blacklisted from having White and anyone on their roster to perform at the University. This led to White writing an open letter addressing the situation and everyone's involvement in the case. Check out some of the interesting articles involving this case and even a video of Jack White's now Famous Leaked Guacamole recipe.

Discussion Questions and Topics

What is the purpose of a rider?

Why do artists make specific requests like fresh guacamole, a steak cooked medium, or no bananas?

Who's typically paying for the items requested on a rider when the show is sold out, and the artist had a "versus" deal?

Who's typically paying for those expenses if the show has not sold well and the artist had a "versus" deal?

Was William Morris Endeavor Entertainment fair about banning all artists from their roster performing at this university?

Did the booking agency and Jack White respond in the best way?

Was it worth it for the school to leak Jack White's rider?

What's the most interesting request you've ever seen on a rider?

Based on the article outlining the expenses of the show and the financial deal outlined in the contract, how much would the University have profited if they sold tickets at $65 rather than $25?

On Sunday, the 16th annual Coachella Festival concluded in California  with performances from major headliners like Drake, Florence and the Machine, Kanye West and David Guetta. Though no official data has been released yet for this year, thanks to the great headliners, the festival is set to make at least if not more money than last year. Last year, over 579,000 people attended over the two weekends, grossing a record-breaking $78.3 million dollars. This year, tickets sold out within 20 minutes of going on sale; three day general admission passes cost $375 and VIP three day passes cost $899.  Coachella is known for it's monster lineups, care-free hippie fashion, surprise cameos, and colorful and eye-catching artwork and installations. Check out the round up of articles, videos, and photos from this year's festival below.
